Martin Luther King, Jr. lived in a Democrat city and state when was violently attacked. He asked for a pistol permit.
Their (the Democrat) understanding at the time was that the Second Amendment was not a pistol permit for public carry.
Rather, according to the Democrat understanding at the time, which is the same understanding that most Democrats have now, was that the Second Amendment allows for, even requires discretion of bureaucrats and politicians for exercising the right to bear arms for self defense in public. On this view, they—the bureaucrats—have to have the power to approve or disapprove individual right to public carry according to their own whims or fancy, without accountability from the public or the courts.
And operating on that understanding, the Democrats in that location had a law that required discretionary permitting systems operated by local bureaucrats who could use their own private judgment, with their private reasons or no reasons at all, and deny anyone they didn’t like a permit for any reason or no reason at all. With no accountability.
And so they denied MLK, Jr’s pistol permit after he was attacked violently.
It was Democrats who did this.
This was one of the reasons Condoleeza Rice gave for becoming a Republican. She was from the same town, same state, and noticed the same thing. That tidbit is on her Wikipedia page, even.
