I Guess I'd Make a Horrible Social Worker
A Moorpark College class, Logic, Fall 2013 quiz someone turned in.
The student , a girl, never took notes. She laughed at all my jokes and attempts at humor, and she turned in drawings for quizzes.
One day, about half way through the semester, while pacing the class as I lectured, I looked down on her desk. She was drawing an island, with a person on it.
I asked, who is that?
She said, you.
Then I noticed that she was drawing someone else on it. I was afraid to ask who that was.
I asked her, Is this your happy place? Is the world just so bad out there that you'd rather sit here in Mather's Logic class , with a zero for a grade, than be out there?
She said, after a pause, yes.
Then I realized that I needed to do a little bit of role switching right there in the lecture, from professor to social worker.
She never came back.
I suppose I'd make a horrible social worker.
