Did I leave my glasses in my car and arrive with my sun glasses at Cal State? Yes.
So, I taught the first half of the once a week class with my prescription sunglasses on. And yes, they thought that I thought I was cool. And then I took them off, with my eyes crossed, and said, this is what it looks like. And they were horrified.
I was born with prescription sunglasses on, I said. I was all greasy and shiny and naked, except those sunglasses. I was steamy from my momma's womb. And I didn't cry. I didn't even cry. Until the doctor took those sunglasses off and I was cross-eyed and then I cried loudly with my crossed eyes. And he put them back on and I was steamily silent.
And my Business Ethics and Public Policy students just looked at me. And then one person laughed. And like happens when one person slow claps and the others in the stadium follow, they all laughed. And then someone gave me a big stuffed owl to put on my shoulder. But the way they threw it to me was backwards. I said, try again. Owls don't fly backwards.
And they stopped laughing. Because I was dead serious.
And they threw the owl forward. Head first.
And I said, that's better. I smiled. Like a cartel leader, I smiled. And then they all smiled.
You didn't throw it, it flew to me, right?
Right, she said. Nervously.
And then I said, proceed with your presentation.
And they fired up the Power Point and presented on something to do with the environment or other.
