Should We Keep Confederate Monuments ?
A California State University (Northridge) Anecdote Prompts Reflection
I do have an argument for keeping the Confederate monuments. Warning: there is Christian cussing in it: There is also a Cal State anecdote:
One benefit is : at least these kids can learn when the *frickin* Civil War was, because they sure as s—t ain't learning it in college (unless they take my class). Colleges don't think it's important -- not the campus culture, which is Democrat, nor the professors, which are Democrat, nor the news, which is Democrat.
My first course I taught at CSUN was called Today's Moral Issues. I made the mistake of asking when the Civil War was. I wanted to make a quick historical reference point during the lecture, for the lecture.
And ... [deep breath] 15 minutes later, an extremely awkward 15 minutes later as I wrote all manner of guesses on the board (I don't allow phones or computers in my class), a home-schooled (read: Republican) chemistry major (read: memorizes/studies) said the right answer, which she knew the entire time. She was the only one who knew. Also one of the only pro-lifers in the class.
So, that's one reason to keep them [monuments] up there.
Since we are graduating historical morons.

Wow! They just aren’t taught. My daughter at the end of fifth grade in 2000, told me her history book said President Lincoln was assassinated by a disgruntled actor. No name, no facts. It was like a side note. In the 1970’s, almost the whole year was dedicated to the Civil War. We had one student who probably knew more about the Civil War than the teacher.
My daughter’s age group is now raising children. History is not being passed down.
