Slavery was (and is, because it still exists) a worldwide phenomenon that goes back into the depths of history and pre-history.
University of Texas Anthropology Professor WW Newcombe, in his classic “The Indians of Texas,” mentions the existence of slavery among the Indians in recorded history with likely continuity going back before the written record.
But I was struck some time ago by just how good this EconTalk episode on Slavery was back in 2006. It’s still a classic. Put it in your “Slavery” file for later or enjoy it now.
Any Republican keeps a keen eye on Slavery. It’s the philosophical and historical foundation of the modern Republican Party — the abolition of slavery. See for instance the write up in chapter 2 of Prof. Sarah Barringer Gordon’s “The Mormon Question,” The Twin Relics of Barbarism. The Republican Party was founded to destroy was slavery and polygamy.
Yes, Republicans were interested in the definition of marriage even back then.
